In some parts of India, the festival of Ganesh is held for ten days. On the day of this occasion, clay idols of Lord Ganesh are placed in homes and public places.

Ganesh Chaturthi Story – How Ganesh Born
Well, there are two stories that tell How Ganesh Born.
The first one is that Goddess Parvati created gave birth to Ganesh (as a normal human) by creating a clay model or from her own body. Then she told him to guard at the door and said that don’t allow anyone to enter as she was bathing.
Then, the husband of Goddess Parvati, God Shiva tries to enter the door, but as Ganesh doesn’t know him, he stopped God Shiva to enter his own home. God Shiva tries again and again but Ganesh doesn’t let him go. Then, God Shiva got angry and started a fight.
In the end, God Shiva wins and he beheads Ganesh. But then he felt guilty as Goddess Parvati came and tells that she created or gave birth to him. Then God Shiva told to the person that brings the head of the first creature you see.
Then the person found a baby elephant and bring his head, then God Shiva rebirth him with the elephant’s head. And then, his name decided as Ganesh.
The second story by a legend is that, Lord Ganesh is created by God Shiva and Goddess Parvati because of the request of Devas (Several Gods), to create a Vighnakartaa (Obstacle Remover) against the Rakshas (Demons). And also to help Devas.
Why Ganesh Visarjan Is Done?
At the starting of Ganesh Chaturthi people brings the statue of Lord Ganesh home and do worship for 10 days after that everyone does the visarjan (immersed in water) of the statue.
The status of Lord Ganesh is created with the clay/earth as he was born. Then after people worship the statue/murti they do visarjan (immersed in water) of the statue) so that Lord Ganesh will be returned to their home.
It is believed by the legends that after 10 days of worshiping the Lord Shiva statue/murti human can’t bear the power of that, and also we can’t destroy or harm the statue/murti as it is disrespectful.
That is why people do visarjan of Lord Ganesh and pray to come back soon on earth next year.
